Superintendent Message – October 30, 2020

The Oregon Department of Education along with the Oregon Health Authority announced new metrics this morning for reopening schools in the state of Oregon.  The new metrics are less stringent and will allow schools within some counties to reopen, others will be able to open for elementary students and some will remain in Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL).  Unfortunately for our students, the Pendleton School District will remain in Comprehensive Distance learning for the time being.  We will not be able to consider implementing reopening plans until our county Covid-19 “test positivity rate” drops below 10% and our new case rate is below 100/100,000 for a two-week period.  The complete press release can be found at the following link.

NEWS RELEASE – ODE Releases Updated School Metrics And Safety Reminders

Once we meet these new metrics, we will be allowed to begin transitioning elementary students back into our buildings.  Our current plan calls for initially bringing grades K-3 back for ½ days in order to maintain social distancing and comply with co-horting and other public health rules for return.  We will make every attempt to give parents a two-week window to prepare for childcare and other family considerations.  It is important to remember that once we are able to “reopen”, it will be a strategic and calculated transition.  Reopening in this sense does not mean all students will return all at once.  Unfortunately for secondary students, CDL will continue for the time being and during the early stages as we are directed to return elementary students first.  Again I would like to remind you that the rules and restrictions for reopening are driven by executive order of the Governor. The governor’s orders direct the Oregon Department of Education (ODE) and the Oregon Health Authority (OHA)  to create and enforce the rules for reopening.

Until then, we need all residents of our community and county to work together to drive our Covid-19 numbers down by wearing a face covering, socially distancing, avoiding large crowds, and self-isolate when you are ill.  As we learn more about the new metrics and guidance, I will provide updates for you.

Respectfully,
Chris Fritsch

Respetuosamente,
Chris Fritsch
